at Western Gailes
The start of the 2024 season was at Western Gailes on the Ayrshire coast. The PGA normally throw in a Stableford event early on which effectively makes your worst score a double bogey. I suppose it takes a little bit of pressure off but it’s still good to play a competitive round despite the format.
I was playing with a couple of younger Pros who I’d never met before so it was nice to chat to some new faces. Early on in the round, I got to explain a good bit about our faith to one of the guys as he had no faith at all. He mentioned this was probably because he’d never been introduced to it, so I gave him a different perspective of God and the church which at least gave him something to think about.
I also mentioned that I’m always available to discuss these things more if required and one of the main reasons I’m on the Tartan Tour.
As we played in some pleasant weather, I also chatted to my other playing partner about possibly using his course as a venue for one of our LGMS events this year.
He was keen to help with this and I’m sure we’ll discuss the finer details in the next month or two, but it’s got the facilities to host around 40 players with private dining which suits us perfectly.
I mentioned that we normally do a talk at the end which requires a separate area and he understood the concept.
Not the usual cold windy conditions that meet us in this part of the world, so it was a fairly relaxing round in some Spring sunshine and the young guys were good company, and a credit to their clubs.
Although I don’t hit the ball as far as these kids, my new irons were doing a nice job and the one stat I was happy with was 13 greens hit in regulation. Hopefully a sign of things to come and I’m happy with the work I’ve put in over winter making some swing changes.
I’m sure I’ll see the lads again this year and I hope they keep in mind what LGMS is all about for the future.
This season is an encouraging start, and we look forward to the year ahead.
