The Scottish PGA Championship returned to Dalmahoy this year and they incorporated the Scottish Seniors over the first two rounds to include more of the older players, such as myself.
I’m now eligible to play in the Seniors after turning 50 this month, and to be honest it does make me feel old now.
After coming to terms with this milestone, which took me a couple of weeks, I looked forward to the event.
There was a lengthy delay due to weather which meant the times were pushed back a bit, but we eventually got out to a playable yet blustery course.
I was playing with the same two players for both days with one player I’d never met and the other one I’d known for a long time.
The player I know has attended one of our Pro-Ams and he mentioned this early in the round. He asked how things were going and I explained our vision for more golf events and Pro-Ams to share my own story along with some truth. He was not opposed to coming along again and I said I’d pop into his club for a coffee which he was open to.
Later on in the round, my other playing partner asked about LGMS and this allowed a more in-depth conversation about faith.
He does not have any faith but does not object to any belief system. I was able to explain that my job was not to force any opinions but simply share some truth because all religions can’t be true and for me, it’s important to choose correctly because that will be best.
He wasn’t quite sure of my response but at least I gave him something to think about and he knows where I am.
A tough day on the course and we all finished over par with some short putts missed. Hopefully, it will be better tomorrow.
Dalmahoy Golf Course and Hotel
A much brighter day for our second round and it was important to improve on the day before. I made a slight change to my putting line-up and this helped to eliminate the 3 putts.
There wasn’t much conversation to speak of during the second round apart from the usual chit-chat, but I did feel my cold getting worse and I tried not to get too close to anyone to avoid passing it on.
At one point I was standing over a shot and I could feel a drip coming down from my nose during the swing. It resulted in a poor shot which I thought was out of bounds but I found it under a tree in a clump of sand. Despite this, I managed to play the shot out and almost holed my chip for a par. A bogey was a good result everything considered.
It was a decent back 9 but I could feel the fatigue and a couple of dropped shots over the last 4 holes was a disappointing end to what would have been a good back 9.
I’m still not playing nearly enough golf but the signs are there to show I can still play and I’ll keep going. More time is required.

After this event, I am convinced of the path ahead and it involves me playing more and spending more time with my fellow Professionals.
I was placed here for a reason and I can see all the pieces falling into place that now is the time to be the Golf Professional I was meant to be and an example to my colleagues both on and off the course. I trust in the path ahead.
