at Bruntsfield Links Seniors

Another PGA Seniors event at Bruntsfield Links was put in the calendar for this year, and it looks as though it will remain as a permanent fixture.
It’s a popular venue for a lot of the older players and is always a joy to play.
I always forget it’s the 4th-oldest golf club in the world, but you’re quickly reminded as you walk through the foyer to the locker room.

I was playing with two players I’ve known for a while, so they are aware of my attachment and what I do.
There wasn’t much conversation for the first half dozen holes, and whether this was due to the wind or just concentrating on the game, I’m not really sure.
I did get the chance to speak with one of the guys walking down the next fairway, but it was fairly brief. Although I mentioned our recent golf day and the hopes of doing more days next year, including a Pro Am, it never really went much further.

I definitely got the impression the guys were of the view, ‘know what it’s about and not really bothered’. It’s unusual to have this happen for most of the day, but there have only been a small handful of events over the years where you felt as though you were wasting your breath. I suppose there will always be situations like this, but it doesn’t make it any easier.

Now into the Second 9 @ Bruntsfield Links

As we played through the back 9, there was an incident on the 15th hole where I was deemed to have taken more than 3 minutes to find my ball.
I wasn’t sure this was the case and played out the hole anyway, but my main argument was that nobody had put a clock on it, and this was more of an opinion than a fact.
I didn’t let it bother me too much as we finished our round, but spoke to one of the PGA officials who basically gave me the view that if your partners think it’s 3 minutes, then it’s lost.
I let it pass and simply made a mental note to get a stopwatch every time I look for a ball. I was disappointed it came to that, as I probably wouldn’t have enforced this if the shoe was on the other foot due to the ambiguity and how close it was. Finished the last 3 holes well despite everything and improving each game, which is good, moving on!

I had to leave right after the round as I was on dinner duty that evening, but I did manage to say hello to a couple of colleagues I’ve known for years. I let them know I was going to be freed up a bit more going forward and would make a point of touching base with them over the winter.
They seemed quite enthusiastic about it, so that was a real positive to take home.

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”  (Isaiah 41:10)
