PGA Stableford at Western Gailes

Western Gailes Golf Course

PGA Stableford Western Gailes

Another blustery day on the Ayrshire coast, and Western Gailes always seems to feel like Groundhog Day. One day we’ll get to play this course with a light breeze, but not today.

I was playing with a couple of colleagues who I’ve known for a long time and are now part of the Senior crew, so I was hoping it would be a chance to recruit for the ProAm in September.
Before we even pegged it up, I spoke with one of them at the practice green, and we had a good chat about what we’ve been up to over the past years, which led me onto our LGMS events and ProAm.
He was more than happy to support the event, and we are now in contact with each other, so I can keep him updated. Easy start.

As we got going, we realised early on that it was not going to be so easy on the course. I’d been swinging reasonably well these past few weeks, but just couldn’t get into any kind of rhythm with the wind howling over my left shoulder.
By the time we reached the 7th tee, we were all a few over, and the next half dozen holes were straight into a 25mph wind. Strong enough to be a problem for swing tempo and some bumpy greens.
There was not much chat at this time apart from some negative comments regarding Trump and the current conflict. I didn’t get too involved in this, but eventually we got on to society as a whole, and I got my piece in about the biggest problem we face today, which is trying to be all things to all men.
I backed this up by saying a nation should have its beliefs and laws adhered to by all who live there, rather than this everyone and anything goes nonsense. It’s sad how our nation has thrown away its identity as a Christian country, and this was agreed by everyone.

We at least got the last few holes downwind, but the damage was done for all of us. Not the performance I was hoping for, but at least I have another Pro willing to attend the ProAm.

Just as we handed our cards in, I got to remind one of the PGA controllers, and a former SPGA Champion, that I’d still like him to speak at our Sandyhills event. He says he hasn’t forgotten about the date and will try to confirm soon. Something to pray about, as I think this would be great for the event.

Despite the ups and downs, we need to keep going as we’re always one step closer to where we should be. Onwards we go.
