PGA Fourball at Falkirk Tryst
When I looked at the PGA schedule earlier in the year, I saw the final of the National Fourball Tournament was in Scotland at Strathmore.
So I thought it would be a good opportunity to have a go at qualifying.
Also, the qualifying course at Falkirk Tryst is a course I know well and is just up the road from me.
After a week of lovely weather, we were left with a horrendous forecast on Monday, and it didn’t get much better. From the off, we had the umbrellas up, and it was not pleasant for most of the front 9.
It’s quite difficult to have any meaningful conversation when conditions are like this, but I was able to share with my group on the 2nd hole about my role with LGMS and the events we have run over the past years.
It was a brief conversation due to conditions, but at least they are now aware of what we’re about, as they’d not heard of us before. It’s not very often I come across a couple of Pros I don’t know or did not know me, but this was one of those times.

As we battled on in the rain, there wasn’t much more chat on the course, but we were all just trying our best to get it round. My playing partner and I hung there, and after a good up and down on the 12th, we knew we needed at least a couple more birdies to cut.
We gave ourselves a good few chances as we played in, and despite a good birdie at 14, we just couldn’t get another one.
It was pleasing how we created the chances at the last 4 holes and could have easily birdied 3 of the last 4, all holeable 12-foot putts.
We narrowly missed out on making it through to the final, but we were always in with a chance up to the last couple of holes, and sometimes that’s all you can ask for when you do your best.
After we finished and dried ourselves off, we all decided to have a bite to eat in the clubhouse. It was nice to get to know the guys a bit better, and although we didn’t go into anything too deep, we chatted about life in general, and I was able to share some of the challenges I’ve experienced recently and in the past.
It was good to consolidate a new connection, and hopefully, this can lead to more in the future.
A little disappointed not to make it through to the final, but it was pleasing that we gave ourselves every chance and played ok despite the conditions. In a way that made it sort of enjoyable, and maybe a wee life lesson in there somewhere.
Let’s try not to get too distracted by the destination but enjoy the challenge of the journey.
