PGA Seniors at Dumbarnie
The last Seniors’ event of the year was at the very exclusive Dumbarnie Links on the east coast. Just up the road from Open Qualifying venues of Leven and Lundin Links, this is a course meandering through the links dunes, and from a distance, you wouldn’t think there was a course in amongst it.
My Dad came with me on his final caddying job of the year, as he was keen to see the course. Also, he knew both the guys I was playing with, as he’d caddied previously each time I’d played with them.
It was a very relaxed group, and as we played the front 9, we all chatted fairly frequently amongst each other, my Dad included.
As the guys were aware of LGMS, they did not enquire too much again, but I did get a couple of chances to share what we’d done this year and our plans for the future. This came about as we were discussing how a Golf Professional’s role has changed over the past decade and how each of us is not necessarily doing a typical ‘Club Pro’ role. Everything is specialised now, and there are very few of the Golf Professionals left that would be classed as such.

We all played quite solidly throughout the round, and it was really nice to experience the venue in fairly tame conditions.
The subtle breaks on the greens were the hardest part of the course and its main defence. Towards the end of the back 9,
I did get to further explain my eagerness to visit various Pros over the winter. It was encouraging that one of the guys gave me his number and was keen for us to do so.
Overall, this was a very pleasant experience, and not only did we all play reasonably well, but there was plenty of interaction with everyone.
It helped consolidate relationships and further develop what we want to do in the near future.
My Dad has helped greatly with this, and many of the Pros see him as one of the group. Relationships are key to what we are doing, and slowly we have built this up over the years. The next step has already begun.
