Get Back to Golf Tour – Hayston Golf Club

Hayston Golf Club

The ‘Get Back to Golf’ Tour is the brainchild of my old boss and friend Alan Tait.
He came up with it to help the Pros and Elite Amateurs in Scotland get more competitive golf despite the Covid restrictions of the past 12 months.
A great idea where you can play at a venue at any time in a 10-day window and send your scores to Alan which are of course certified by playing partners who must be members of the tour.
This year he has around 12 venues and could potentially be the future of tournament golf in Scotland for the foreseeable.

Get Back to Golf at Hayston Golf Club

I had arranged to play with Alan a few months back at the well-known Hayston Golf Club in Kirkintilloch and we were joined by Stevie Gray and Robert Arnott.
It was always going to be tough seeing Alan again as he recently lost his older brother to a heart attack and they were very close. I just gave him a big hug when I saw him and we chatted for 10 minutes before the boys joined us. He was in good spirits but I know he’ll struggle with this for a long time and I’m there for him whenever he needs me.

We got going late afternoon but the weather was great and held up right into the evening.
All these guys were and are good players so it was nice to keep up with them, at least till the back 9 where I ran up a triple bogey from nowhere and spoiled what was a nice round.
I didn’t get much opportunity to get into anything when we got playing but Robert and I had a brief chat about Political correctness and where I stood.
I shared a story I’d heard about the train conductor getting into trouble because he offended a ‘Non-Binary’ by announcing ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ and I made no apologies about the fact we have become too accepting of this type of thing in society.
I said people can choose to do or be whatever they want, rightly or wrongly, but object to it being forced on us all as the norm and repeated my stance that it’s really not the way it was meant to be. He said something quite amusing that I can’t really repeat but let’s just say he did not disagree.

Hayston golf course 5th hole

I did manage to share my idea of a charity fundraiser of beating your age with golf holes played in a day. This would mean I would have to play 3 rounds from dawn till dusk and the monies raised from potential sponsors would be split between equally between LGM Scotland and another charity such as Marie Curie or The Heart Foundation. Alan definitely likes the idea and know he would support the event by playing one of the rounds wherever we decide to do it.

All of the boys have attended a Logos Pro-Am before so they are aware of our presence but are quite guarded about straying into that territory.
I don’t give up hope that I can be there for them all someday but there is a wee bit to go there.
It is very difficult when the world is the way it is these days but all we can do is pray and stand our ground.

We keep going,
